More “new and improved” high blood pressure medications

So-called renin-inhibitors are a new class of high blood pressure medications. On the one hand, some reports claim that a new drug of this type called Tekturna is more effective than another class of drug called angio-tensin converting inhibitors.

However, most sources say that the new drug is no more effective than older drugs and may even increase blood pressure in some patients. This is typical for the drug industry. Every drug has hidden risks which sometimes don’t appear for many years. All drugs work by affecting a physicological process which has repurcussions for other parts of the system.

In any case, the best result for any of these drugs is a reduction of around 12 points in systolic blood pressure. Is it worth it? Only as a last resort if nothing else works. Typically, losing weight, changing to a healthy diet and getting in shape will reduce high blood pressure by far more than 12 points.
