Curcumin for Pain Relief

Curcumin is commonly used for pain relief. Extracted from turmeric, this polyphenol has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for the treatment of many ailments although it is for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties that it finds applications today for pain relief.

Curcumin is a COX-2 inhibitor, and can offer pain relieving properties without the side-effects often associated with pharmaceutical analgesics. This renders it ideal for pain relief in cases with kidney or liver problems that can be exacerbated by many forms of painkillers. COX-2, or Cyclooxeganase-II, is an enzyme responsible for the production of prostaglandins that initiate the inflammatory response of the immune system, and sensitize nerve endings to pain.

There are a number of different prostaglandin receptors, each having a specific function, and many resulting into the sensation of pain.  COX-2 inhibitors prevent the COX-2 enzyme from producing prostaglandins, and so help to reduce inflammation and pain. As a COX-2 inhibitor, curcumin is used to reduce the effects of inflammation and help to reduce the pain of inflammatory conditions such as arthritis.
